So, in this girlie girl household I have no clue about things that don't involve sparkles & tulle, and Little Miss Popular, Halley has been invited to upcoming birthday bashes for boys from her class.

What in the heck do you buy for a 5 year old boy?

I am guessing it probably isn't found in the pink aisles at Teer-get.

Can you help me?

Any suggestions would be AMAZING!  How about something your son loves, or a gift you have given (or even made) that was a huge hit.
I don't really know what these boys are interested in... so I have no place to start from.
That's where you get to save the day.

So, that's my question for you.

Do you have any questions for me?

What do you want to know about my silly little life?
(I need subjects to post on.... and I do happen to know myself pretty well, so we all win.)

So answer and ask away.

Muchas gracias!!!

  2. i only have boys...my youngest will be 5 at the end of this month and my older just turned 7. they both LOVE legos. they have lots of sets varying in prices. some for even as little as $5 and obviously it goes up from there! they also love monster trucks and my younger one enjoys Rescue Heros (made by Fisher Price) this won't be helpful yet but in another year or so for a boy's party my 7 year old loves Magic Tree House Chapter books and wanted them for his 6th & 7th birtydays. there is lots of talk about power rangers, pokemon, & such but we are stearing away from that for as long as possible! :) hope that helps. i see i'm the first to comment so hopefully you'll get more ideas too!

  3. Any boy that comes over to our house LOVES transformers!!! That has been the new craze around here.

Let's see...what question to ask you...I would love to know how to make that yummy breakfast french toast dish. That was SO yummy and would be perfect for fall. Or, how to make a cute tutu skirt. I would love to learn that!

  4. Nerf guns with the lime green balls... A HIT with all the boys we have bought them for and my 5 year old son owns the whole collection.

  5. I like to give art supplies for children's birthdays. I think they're gender neutral, and they're sure to be used. I'd get a nice sent of paints and maybe an art set themed around the boy's interests (you'd have to call the moms on that one). Plus, it's a quieter alternative for when mom wants some time without so much action!

  9. How about a fun magazine subscription....like "my big backyard" or other gender neutral fun (and educationl) kids mags (there are tons out there)....the gift that gives all year long! I think kids like getting their own special something in the mail.

I want to know....Hmm...what are you planning on naming your 3rd little beauty? And, what are Halle and Lucy's middle names? I'm not preggers, but I have a feeling when I am, I'm getting another girl (would be a YAY)---just plannin ahead.....and nosey, hee hee!

  10. Toys are always fun, but the birthday boy/girl always seems to get a lot of them so I would go for a different approach.

A gift my niece loves is "The Human Body Book" you can find it at Costco or Sam's Club and it shows the human body parts and describes things.... very advanced but she loves it. I think they have a dinosaur one as well.

Another idea is to buy him pajamas, a good book and a fun toothbrush. I know most kids are thinking... a toothbrush? But if you get it in his favorite character and it spins- they'll be sure to love it.

    Good luck!

  11. The best, all-time gifts I used to give my son's friends was a gift bag filled with office supplies - tape, paperclips, sticky pads, cool pens, etc. After all the gadgets and toys and garbage the kid would get, invariably as he opened up the gift bag, he would say, "TAPE! I've got tape!" Lovely response. -- Michele

  12. Tim and I have a 5 year old nephew Zack - he loves dinasaurs and monster trucks. He also loves movies! Star wars DVD is a fun, classic gift. I think Zack has watched that 50,000 times. I also want to know Why Joy's Hope?

  13. Boy essentials include, but are not limited to the following... rope, a tape measure, tape, pad of paper, a flash light, a cool pen, fun snacks, a small set of legos or a matchbox car and The Dangerous Book For Boys! Wrap it all up in a cute back pack type bag... which I'm sure you can make... and you are golden!
You can get all the items with the
exception of the Dangerous Book for Boys... at Big Lots for really inexpensive!

Where do you get your lettering for the awsome signs you make? If you make it how do you?

  16. Target sells a toy called Zoom-o. It is a toy with several disks and you press the button and the disks fly into the air. My boys love it (ages 3 and 5) as do all of my nephews (who range in age up to age 9)! It is 9.99 and makes a nice gift! I hope this helps!

  17. My son just turned 6 and someone gave him a tool box with his own tools. She went to Loes and got him cheap tools just like Daddy's. He thought is was so great when he opened it.

  18. I have 8 and 6 year old boys and it doesn't matter what age they are, all boys (and girls) LOVE capes! I recently found this great superhero cape tutorial (http://pukingpastilles.com/?p=57)
and you can't hardly rip them off in the middle of the night without them waking up and refusing to take them off :) This will be an easy project for you with your talents!
Also an apron or tool belt loaded with working tools is a big hit! . . . .anything dress-up really (this time of the year you may even be providing the Halloween costume :)
    Good luck!

  19. Okay I don't really know too much about 5 year old boys, only 2-3 year old ones, so I'd be of no help. And it seems that you have gotten tons of great ideas.

So I'll go for the questions...
What are you making for the boutiques? Do you have your own Etsy shop? Where do you find all of your fabulous fabrics? How much are you willing to pay per yard? Where did you learn how to sew? What kind of sewing machine do you have? What would you recommend for a novice?

  21. My son is into anything superheros, spiderman, incredible hulk, dinosaurs, pirates.

Something that could be made for a boy is a superhero cape...all boys like dressing like superheroes!

    Hope this helps.

  23. My son is five and all boy. He loves superheroes of all sorts. He also loves Star Wars (new and old). So as far as making something I think capes are pretty cool. My son has one that is reversable with Batman on one side and Superman on the other. He runs around the house pretending to fly and fight crime. Hope this idea helps!

  24. These days my favorite birthday gift (girls and boys alike) is a personalized initial tee (or backpack, apron, etc.) from www.polkadotmarket.com. I know, however, you have the talent to pull off things like that on your own. So my suggestion is... handmake something! Just no tulle this time :)

  25. having 2 girls, its fun to shop for boys. our fun gift that we are giving to the boys in our life are wallets. i had found a few billabong wallets on clearance, bought 4 or 5 and whala, thats our gift. i put either a gift card in, or a little cash. they love it!

  27. I work with elementary age kids and they are bringing mini skate boards to school called Tech Decks. They sell them at target. They are also bringing these little round transformer like toys. Ok, I looked them up and they are called Bakugan. They are spheres that unfold into animals. They seem like pokemon- kind of.

  28. You already have some great suggestions but as a mom of three boys I feel I must chime in. My older boys (6 & 3 1/2) love Legos but they're so hard to keep away from my youngest (11 months). I'm constantly fishing them out of his mouth. So I'd be weary of them if there are younger ones in the house too. Kid K'Nex are another HUGE favorite with my boys as well as my nieces and nephews.
The superhero cape is a good idea too. My boys (and my niece:)) love the ones I made for them! Good luck!

Hmmm...a question for you. Do you have a name picked out for #3? Do people assume you're trying for a boy? With three boys, I get asked all the time if we're trying for a girl. Just wondering if it works the other way around too. :)

  29. The boys in my life that are that age (my 3 nephews) all love art supplies. I think those are their favorite things to do. You tool box that you made girly could be really cute to fill with crayons, markers, rope, tape, etc. Kind of like a MacGyver art kit. :)

There also is really a lack of dress up stuff for boys out there, so a cape is brilliant, or cowboy or rescue hero style stuff for playing dress up!

I don't have a question for you, but I will say that after reading all the comments I am excited for you to share about the "Why Joy's Hope". You are a beautiful mama and your story is such a huge blessing in my life.

awhile ago you mentioned possibly starting a little girl/kids shop...maybe on etsy? Are you still thinking about doing that? Because I would LOVE that!!!!
