45 miles in July.
BOOM.

Plus a little extra credit.

Still hate it.  Still sweaty.
Still not quitting.
Mainly just to eat more food and to outsmart MyFitnessPal each day.
Three miles = CUPCAKE TIME.
That is math that I can support.
53.99 miles.
The last mile?
That was a fun one.  It was boiling hot, so I decided to wear my super ugly/ super comfy/ Payless version of FitFlops.  The same pair that I have walked countless miles at Disneyland in.  The ones that have never shown any signs of wearing out.
Until they did.
One mile in, down this trail, the toe strap busted.
Just like that.
NOT AWESOME.
I swiped my husband's socks off his feet (yep), we turned around, and nothing stood between the INFERNO blacktop and my sad innocent feet, but a pair of too big men's socks.
That was not uncomfortable at all.
I would have sat in the stroller if I fit.

The people who run barefoot are CRAZZZZZZYYYYY.
For sure their feet are hideous.
I'm sticking to my normal tennis shoes next time.

Speaking of which, I am in need of a new pair.
I set a goal of treating myself to a great fitting pair of shoes once I hit 100 miles.  No sense in getting them if I was just going to quit and I still can't believe it's sort of a reality now!!!

Got any recommendations?  Part of me wants a pair of rad turquoise Nike's...  But I'm thinking they need to be more about fit and comfort than cute.

The goal for August is 42 miles.

Are you in, or are you in?

shoes that die in the middle of nowhere.
i'm glad you survived to tell the tale.
because. i would be SO miserable.

i think you should get the turquoise nikes.
they are nike free (but aren't really FREE, free), yes? i love mine.

also i dropped out of #milesin for july.
    i probably shouldn't have.
august isnt looking promising either. yikes.

  2. STRONGLY STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend you go to a running store to get fitted. For reals, they look at your stride and how your feet walk and help you pick shoes that will prevent all kinds of injuries. And they are so nice and happy about it! And then you can return the shoes if you get home and they don't feel awesome. They make a HUGE HUGE difference.

    You go, girl.

Also next time, you could put the sandals on your feet then socks over the sandals. Toddler style, yo.

    1. I agree with LauraC, definitely go to a running store and get fitted. Even if you don't buy them there at least find out what type of shoe is best for you. I love roadrunnersports.com and they even have some retail stores in CA.

    2. Ha did not see your comment before I commented. I am right there with you! People are so different. Seek knowledgeable staff. No Dick's Sporting goods for this!

  3. I just got the free runs and love them! Really the most comfortable shoes I have ever put on my feet. I searched high and low for the tiffany ones in my size but had to slightly settle for my other fave color! But i also researched and researched and tried on other shoes before I got them.

  4. Julie... I would definately go into a running store (not a big box sports one) Something like Runner's Roost, (I don't know what you have out there) and talk to them about your goals, current walking/running. Have them look at your feet, your walking/running form etc. and let them help you pick out a shoe. Peoples feet are all different. How they strike their foot, pronation and supination of your ankle and foot do matter. You also will have to decide how much support you want, heal to to slope, etc. It will make all the difference in the world!

  6. Okay, fine. I'm in. As long as you give me a virtual high five at the end of the month!

  7. I fell in love with the Saucony brand last year. My feet tend to go to sleep when I walk (not a good problem to have), but these have a ton of room in the toe area and I can walk for miles with no pain or numbness at all. They are really affordable, durable and even pretty cute! Good luck!

  8. i'll join in with the choir... go to a running store, get a on a treadmill and let them tell you what you need. i have mizunos. they make me run better. really. nikes are cute, but they totally gave me a host of knee problems.

  9. nikes are so dreamy. i got a pair and hurt my ankle, knee and heel. got to a running store they will hook you up! for realz.

  10. get yourself some nikes for running errands and chasing down the kids - its your reward. First, though, get a pair of fit for you running shoes like everyone else said.

Dont give up on the nikes though

  12. You rock your (husband's) socks off! ;) You totally inspire me. Turquoise Nike's sound awesome, but I'm more of an Asics girl myself.

  13. Way to go on sticking with it! I am not a runner but a walker, and occasionally a stair down-and-up-er. I actually have the turquoise Nike frees, my husband surprised me with them for Valentine's day. They are super comfortable and light, but of course, every foot is different. ;)

  14. Great job! Stick with it. I suggest going to a running store and having your gait, stride analyzed, then choose shoes based on the pros recommendations! Nike are really cool, but you might need something more specific to your gait, stride. I run in Asics for flat feet....

    Have fun and happy running!;)

  16. I'm in. Doing those miles on a treadmill in the A/C in miserably hot/humid Florida, though. : ) Hope that isn't cheating!

  17. I have the Saucony Pro-Grid Kinvara's in hot pink. They rock.
They are super light weight and are a runner's shoe. My first real runners...that I actually researched...for RUNNING. Killer I tell you. You'd never regret them for one milli-second.

  18. Great job! I'm super impressed! I treated myself to Nike Air Torch 4's last year and am SO glad I did! I searched around until I found a perfect fitting pair. They are like walking on a cloud. Shop around and get fitted and enjoy some new cushies for your feet...and a cupcake!

  19. I've had two pairs of Havs do that to me. Bam. No warning. Dumb. Anyhoo, I like New Balance...wide toe box for my wide post child bearing feet! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nikes are only good if you have wideish feet... I like Asics. Currrently run in Cumulus 13's. Get fitted to find out about your arches, if you pronate and all that good stuff.
I would suggest you check out endless.com for prices, they are pretty good.

  21. Asics or New Balance. I bought a fitbit last Christmas and Love it!I I try to get to at least 10K steps daily and 3 days a week to 15K

  22. You can totally get GOOD running shoes that are super cute!

I have Merrell brand barefoot running shoes that are bright purple... and they're pretty awesome. I've noticed that when I run in not so good shoes, my ankles hurt like crazy - when I wear my barefoot shoes... I feel great!

  23. Another vote for having your running analyzed for the right shoes for you. I wore Nike's for a few years but recently got a pair of Saucony's that I love. I also won a pair of Sketcher Go Run shoes and I like them for shorter runs & walks, although they take a little getting used to. My girlfriend used to go to Snail's Pace in Orange for running stuff.

  25. scuse me but are you referring to my rad turquoise nikes?! Cause yes they are cute, but I did do my research. promise ;)
i love them. They are comfy. they make me feel bouncy. no shin splints. my pace picked up when I started wearing them. they are wide enough for my wide feet.

im sure there are better ones out there, but these {lunar 3's} got great reviews AND they were on sale for like 50something.
    Sold.

  26. way to go! keep it up! it gets better. promise. as for the shoes, i was a nike girl for years but after having my "run analyzed" at a running store (which didn't cost a thing!) i was switched to a full fledged mizuno lover. made a huge difference! love them. good luck in august! i know you are going to rock it!

  27. i wanted cute shoes, too, but my husband picked out brooks for me, and while they are not cute, they are amazingly comfy and i have ad NO knee trouble! yay!

    way to go!!!
    you are so rad!

  28. Julie, you go girl! This reminded me of many years ago when my son was doing a triathlon in the Northeast. His times were great but he ran across the finish line with only one running shoe on! Funny, I never asked him how many miles into his run that he lost that shoe.

    Blessings!

  29. find a running store...we have a place in NC called Off 'n Running. You go, they watch you walk, they watch you run, they have you stand on this awesome thing that shows exactly how your feet are made (arch, etc) and then they fit you with the exact kind of shoe you need for your feet. that is the way to go...they will be expensive but totally worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Save your gas and go to Roadrunner in Laguna Hills. (Right behind the mall by TJ's) They do foot analysis. A marathoner recommended them to me and I have no more shin splints. Thanks for posting your mileage! It inspired me to keep track of mine and that pushes me. I am this month...6 miles so far. ;-)

P.S. So sorry about your comfy flip flops. Hot pavement...no likey.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ohhh, so sad about the flip flops/hot pavement situation ~ No bueno! But congrats on your awesome running accomplishment!!!
Are you following milesin? I noticed that in one of the comments. Just wondering how you set your daily goals. Good luck in August! :)

  32. What’s color got to do with it!? Personally, I think a lot. ;) I love wearing my purple, yes, purple shoes--you know me! ;) I find when I think of tying up my purple shoes for a jog, it gets me going. These are the shoes I have: http://www.6pm.com/new-balance-classics-m574-purple-suede-mesh Look under the colors, and click on the teal, I think you would love those! I think they are pretty, maybe my next pair!? I love the 80’s look and now the hardest part will be deciding which color to get, I like the dark green too. They have so many colors that they didn’t have when I ordered mine. Anyhow, I have super picky feet, and these have not given me any blisters or aches and pains of any kind, I love them. I would however probably only recommend them for walking/jogging. My older brother is a serious runner and he would not get them for running. He runs 5k’s and 10k’s regularly, and then some. He told me that after trying several Nike’s, he was going back to his favorite, Nike Air Pegasus. Find out what type of foot you have, he recommended I do that too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_type There are a lot of websites out there that show you how to do it or go to a running shoe store to have them help you. This will help you decide what kind of shoe you need. When I get my next pair of jogging/running shoes, I think I’m going to go with something higher end like the ones he recommended, while he has a neutral foot, I have the underpronator, so the Nike Air Pegasus would probably work for me too. The higher end shoes will mention which foot type the pair of shoes are built for, under product info. I bought my shoes from 6pm.com, they have the Nike Air Pegasus there too: http://www.6pm.com/nike-air-pegasus-28-pure-platinum-wolf-grey-burnt-turquoise-anthracite but not in my size, so I probably will be getting mine through zappos.com. My brother has ordered from zappos forever and if they don’t fit, just ship them back and get another pair that does, they have super fast shipping compared with 6pm.com (their overstock store) too. Hope this helps. And way to go Julie on the mileage! :) I’m working on getting into better shape myself . . . so I’m joining you! ;) I plan on running a 5k http://thecolorrun.com/ in October!?! Should be fun!

  33. Asics are my fave. Nikes just don't fit my foot right....but thankfully Asics have come a long way and made some super cute ones lately. I have a pair of white with bright orange that I love. Annoying huh ;)

  34. WAY TO GO!!! You are doing awesome! Imagine how fast you'd be walking if you actually were wearing shoes? Ha! Maybe you do walk faster in those things- I'm asian and I don't even wear those to Disneyland!!!
I love Nike and even have a Nike Fetish on my Pinterest, but I RUN in Mizuno's. Absolutely my FAVORITE running shoes- heck, you've got dress up shoes, sandals for park days, etc- get what you need for your li'l doggies!
    HUGS!'
Did I see you today at Sector 5? :-)
    Love & blessings!

  35. I totally have a 100 mile goal too! When I hit mine I'm buying myself some better running clothes (for the same reasons you've been waiting on your new shoes). I'm only up to mile 11 so far though. Way to go for running over 40 miles last month! You rock!

  36. Puma H-Street racers!!! When there is no more tread, I order another pair in a different color. It's as close as I will get to barefoot running ;)

  37. I really want the teal merrells that are a cross between barefoot running and tennis shoes.

  39. Lots of people recommending you go to a running store for shoes - definitely recommend it! Shoes that felt comfortable and stable for my once broken ankle actually were causing A LOT of crazy ankle rolling (even while walking only) which could lead to injury. You don't always get to pick your favorite color when buying shoes this way, but they will be so much better for you in the long run. You'll really hate running if it leads to injury!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love those turquoise Nikes too... haven't tried them on though.
I have always been a fan of Brooks running shoes. I am no runner. But, they are the most comfortable sneaks I have owned.

  41. I have some Addidas trail runners that I bought at the outlet store. They are great for light hiking and provide a ton of grip. Which is helpful if you're a little on the trippy side, which I am. And they're kinda cute. Black and grey with hot pink soles and hot pink shoelaces.

  42. Thanks for your motivation to run...I NEED it right now! My podiatrist SWEARS by Asics. Bring an old pair of kicks to a running shop and they can see how you wear on them.
