So, I was really awesome at getting my kids to sleep.  Like the mom you hate.  The mom who's kids sleep through the night at eight weeks.  The kids who still take naps in second grade.  The mom who is secretly all judgey of the other moms who have kids that don't sleep.  The mom who just thought- hello, you put them in their cribs and they sleep.  It's not rocket surgery.

BUT IT IS ROCKET SURGERY!!!

Because this boy turned everything upside down.  All of my tricks.  All of the tricks of everyone else in the universe.  Yes, everyone in the universe told me what to try.  I cannot believe I used to be THAT GIRL with THE ANSWER.  Ewwwwwwwww.

None of them worked.  I became the mom that the other secretly judgey moms judged.

(I totally deserved it.)

Until... he slept his very first FULL night in his crib.  On his ten month birthday.  TEN MONTHS.  Not ten weeks.  Yep.  Judge away.  I can take it.  If I can take ten months of horrible sleep, I can take a little judgement.

But you know what ten months does to you?  Makes you a little irrational.  Superstitious. Paranoid.  Loco.

These little moose jammies?  I am operating under the delusion that they are woven of magical sleeping glitter.  Because the first time he wore them, was the first time that he slept straight through.

So guess what he wore again last night?
Yep.  Hello moose.
Those moose worked their magic again.

Guess what is in the washing machine right this very moment?

Moose.

He might just wear them every single night until he moves out of the house.

(Thanks Kendra.  The moose are my fave.)

  2. So are you going to go buy the Moose jammies in every available bigger size? Plus a backup pair? :)

  3. I have a friend and her baby was literally sleeping like 8 hours a night when she was just a few days old. I think when I pop my kid out, if it won't sleep, I'm just going to give it to her. She's obviously some sort of baby sorceress.

  4. I have had exactly the same experience! My first three were all awesome sleepers - when people asked me what special techniques I used, I didn't know what to tell them. We just had a consistent bedtime routine, put them in their cribs, and turned out the light.
Now my fourth hates to sleep, apparently. Even napping is about 20 minutes or less. She is almost six months old and still wakes up at least three times during the night. sigh. I need me some magic pajamas...

  5. Well crud-- I'm afraid I may still be that judgey mom who still doesn't get it why her sister's kid isn't sleeping. Not that we've never had periods where we've struggled but we always have worked our kids past that in a short amount of time. (Even the daycare kids would take naps for me but not their parents.) But here I am, due with my 4th at the end of August... and suddenly filled with fear that this is going to be the one who doesn't sleep... better put magical pajamas on my list of things to buy! BTW, hooray for sleeping!

  7. Whatever works! The more children you have the less you know, right? So happy that your getting sleep. Praying it continues and there are more moose jammies in stock.

  8. Welcome to the Mothers of Reluctant Sleepers Club! Like you, our first three littles slept through the night without much trouble. Our number four came around and WHAM, BLAM, NO SLEEP, MA'AM! I think she was nearly 3 years old before she slept through the night on a consistent basis. I will pray that the tide has permanently turned for you! *sending sleep, baby, sleep vibes in your direction*

  9. Where are said magical moose pajamas available? I need some for my own 10 month old who won't sleep through the night!

  10. I am the mom who thought all you moms who talked about your kids sleeping through the night and going down so easy were really just lying. My first hated sleep. Tried EVERYTHING to get him to go to sleep. He still doesn't like it all too much and he's 4 1/2. My 2 year old doesn't sleep all night either, he wakes up screaming bloody murder at 11:30pm and 2am every night. Thankfully, God was gracious, my 3rd is an easy girl and she likes to sleep. I truly thought it was impossible for us to make babies that slept. I've been a zombie for 4 1/2 years. Somehow I have survived, but lost precious brain cells I'm sure of it! I'm SOO happy for you that he finally slept, I totally know the misery of being exhausted beyond anything you thought possible.

  11. With me it was my first. 14 months was when he started really sleeping. Amazing that I had 3 more. 2 middles were sleepers, 4th was not. But once she decided to sleep through, she really meant it. :) Five years later and sleep is my best friend.

  13. Yes! This was me, too, Julie. My first two children were pretty textbook, but my third wasn't. I tried all my tricks, all my friends' tricks, some strangers' tricks, and nothing worked until he magically slept well starting at about 11 months. Definitely a humbling experience!

  15. This post is definitely that of a sleep-deprived momma. :) I feel your pain though. My little one didn't sleep more than 3 hours at a time for the first year of her life. AN ENTIRE YEAR PEOPLE!!! I'm still trying to catch up. And she's 4.

  16. Oh you crack me up. Spool would you be willing to share your tricks that worked with the girls... even tho they didn't so much with your sweet bebe boy??

  17. We had the same issues with our second one. Baby number 1 was fast as,eel in her crib by 6 weeks, through the night. Number two? Oh holy hell. Baby girl turns 11 months in 2 days and she jusT started sleeping through the night 2 weeks ago. 10 months of no sleep. I feel your pain. Zoey has magic purple yoga pajamas she sleeps in every.single.night because they are magic.

  18. so so happy for you!!!! i hear you girl. ours was our 3rd boy. first two slept through the night in weeks. then our sweet little sawyer came along. and he is going to be the death of us, that child. TWO YEARS. two years it took that child to sleep through the night. and it may take me another 13 to get him night time potty trained. no judging here. parenting is not for wimps.

  19. yay for sleep!!! we didn't have magical sleep glitter pjs, but we had magical nasty blow-out poop pjs... doesn't have the same ring. sometimes i think we were punished just for trying out the "pink puppies" pjs to see if they were still poop-inducing. Every.single.time.

  20. I think if we were all honest we'd all admit to being judgmental of others parenting style. I like the comment above that said the more kids you have the less you know. So so true! So glad he is sleeping through the night!

  21. Thanks for sharing! I'm a new mommy (18 days), and it is encouraging to hear. Unfortunately we women get thrown into this competitive ring, whether we like it or not, about our children. Thanks for sharing your heart!!

  22. YEAH!!! I would be doing the same with the moose pjs! My first didn't sleep through until 14 months! My second slept through around 6 months - the Lord knew what I needed when he gave me a baby that slept!

  23. Yiiipppppeeee! I was the toddler sleep whisperer until my daughter came along & taught me otherwise! We do have to have humble pie from time to time!!! Also, did you see delia creates' recipe for her iced almond joy drink? I cant link it here for some reason, but i thought you might like it. Maybe for when we've had too many iced coffees for one day? Cant wait to try it this weekend!

  25. Feeling your pain. My son was 7 mos the first time and didn't do it regularly until he was TWO. TWO YEARs! But, he's 14 now and pretty much everything else has been easy peasy, so take it judgey peeps! ;)

  26. Yay for good sleep!!! I am so the same way. Just last week I told my Mom that my daughter was NOT allowed to wear the same jammies as the night before because it had been a HORRID night of sleep....the kind where she wakes up (teething) every 20 minutes or so and my husband was working a 72 so it was all me. Long night. Changed the jammies and the next night- wha-lah- back to sleep! Ha :)
Hope those moose jammies keep workin their magic. Sleep baby sleep.

  27. I would be buying those moose pjs in bulk! I don't miss the sleepless nights.

  28. My sister was a fan of the Kate Plus 8 show. On one episode, Kate had the kids bring their sheets from their beds so they would have some familiarity from home when they were sent out to baby-sitters (I know I'm reaching here, but I didn't actually watch the episode myself). So my husband and I adopted this theory with our boy/girl twins when it was time for them to sleep in their own cribs. We'd use my nightgown and my husband's undershirt, so they could sleep with our scent. It worked like a charm. Try it, he might like it too!

  29. No judg-y judge here. Every child is different; every mom is different; every family is different. So glad you've been able to get a full night's sleep! Love warm footie pjs. They are a staple in our house and our kids sometimes wear them during the super cold months during daytime too, non-naptime. Shhh, don't tell!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, bless your heart. Julia didn't sleep until 18 months. So, you can feel free to judgey judge away :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. so funny. no judging here. my kids were terrible sleepers. still would rather be awake. i can definitely empathize with you!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You might want to buy them in every size possible.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha! You're a crack up. I'll take some magical sleeping glitter - maybe if I store it away it will grow and then I can use them for my eventual babies! I'm so glad there's some bedtime progress :) GO SHANE, GO!

    Love you :)

  40. Oh I need some of those magical pjs for our 18 month old. She has been a perfect angel sleeping through the night at 7 weeks... but not anymore. Now she wants to stay up and play at all hours of the night. I need me some magical pjs. :-)
