While in my frosting snobbery, I never think that store bought frosting is acceptable, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the wonder that is Cool Whip.  In fact I just pulled a batch of Puffs out of the oven for a graduation party, and had to hold myself back from licking the beaters clean from their delicious cool whippiness.
But there comes a time and a place to make the real deal.

Fresh real whipped cream.  There is nothing like it.  Nothing.  If by chance you have never tried making it, for fear that it is difficult, you will be pleasantly surprised.  It is pretty much as easy as it gets.  Promise.
You don't need a Kitchenaid (although that would be nice), you just need a basic hand held mixer.  A whisk attachment is handy, but not necessary.
Freeze a metal bowl and your beaters, follow the instructions on the carton and be amazed.
(Be warned, if you buy this brand, there are no instructions on the carton.  Major fail.  Google will have to step in and help.)
I give you to the end of June to take on this challenge.  I will be checking on your progress and sharing some of my favorite uses for the whipped magic.

  3. There is NOTHING like fresh whipped cream. But because I'm a bit lazy at times (shocker) sweets and I 'invested' in an Isi Whip Cream canister that gives you instant fresh whip cream. For reals. You just add the cream, a splash of vanilla and a bit of powdered sugar (if you like) and there you have it. Seriously, such a fun splurge ... we love it!!

  4. It is always such a special treat, and even my husband (who is not a treat fan at all...weirdo!) feels the love when I make REAL whipped cream. We love it best on pumpkin pie, strawberry shortcakes, or heck...on your finger! xo

  5. You don't need a mixer!
A cold bowl, whisk and a firm hand are really all you need :) it takes a bit longer, but really not much. Just beat, beat, beat then add a little sugar and vanilla and beat some more until you have stiff peaks.

If you over beat, you will end up with butter and a little bit of watery liquid. And honestly, the butter is pretty fantastic, too :)

  6. Two parts whipping cream to one part coconut milk and sugar to taste. Hints at the tropics and adds some fun variety! Mmm!

  7. I'm totally with you on this! I love summer time cupcakes with whipped cream on top! It's so easy... why buy the stuff in a can?

  8. Delicious with strawberry shortcake! My favorite recipe is still from this cookbook i got over 20(!) years ago. The biscuits are tough to beat, and the fresh whipped cream makes it irresistable!

  10. ohhh, we love homemade whipped cream on strawberry shortcake. don't worry, you are not the only frosting snob ~ i don't think i have used the canned stuff in close to 15 years, nothing beats from scratch icing. the worst is going to a party and biting into cake/cupcakes with the canned stuff and wanting to spit it out. yucky!

  13. I freakin' love fresh whipped cream..I make it every time I need whip cream. I just add a lil vanilla and powdered sugar to taste and then am ready to sit in front of the bowl with a soup ladle. :)

  14. We LOVE homemade whipped cream, and considering the other stuff is FILLED with trans fat, we're totally disgusted by that yummy unbelievably delicious crud! ;)

But if you REALLY want to try something yummy, make this frosting! Butter cream has always been too sweet for me, but this stuff is GREAT! It makes a ton, though, so maybe 1/4 batch would be enough.. yum yum yum!

  16. Hello!
I wish my mom read blogs, cause this is like her biggest pet peeve.
Ever since I was a kid she has made fresh whipped cream.
It's considered a SIN to buy or serve that gross stuff in an aerosol can in her presence!!
There really is nothing like it.
Looking forward to your posts =)

  18. I love homemade whipped cream. There is really nothing like it and it takes 2 minutes to make. You don't really even need a mixer or a whisk. Sometimes I just use a fork and whip like eggs, takes a bit longer and requires a bit of elbow grease but it's lower maintenance. I like to add a splash of vanilla to mine :)

  19. My mother-in-law introduced me to this, she makes hers with Splenda. I started adding just a touch of cocoa powder to make it chocolate flavored, yummy!

  20. There is nothing quite the same as homemade whipped cream. We always do homemade on our strawberry shortcake!

  21. i LOVEEEEE whipped cream. aerosol, homemade. whatever. not a huge fan of Cool Whip though. too sweet. tastes like the container sometimes. i mean, i'll eat it if there's no other options. but it's not my first choice. more like 278th choice.

  22. I worked for Cheese Cake Fact once upon a time and we made our own there. Homemade is so yum. My brother works for Starbucks and they make their own as well.

  23. I use whipping cream instead of milk when I'm making frosting! Hows that for frosting snobbery?

  24. My mixer bit the dust. When I make whipped cream I pour it into a tupperware bowl and shake it. The boys sometimes help (for about 10 seconds). It goes pretty quick and your arms get a good workout.

  25. Do you have a favorite frosting recipe? I'm a frosting snob too...always looking to try new recipes until I find (or create) the perfect one!

  26. Just add a little sugar and you're good! Layer vanilla cake, strawberries or other berries/fruit, and the whipped cream. Delicious!
