Today in the rain.

On this gray and rainy morning, my little one woke up with a creepy nose and a noisy cough.   A rare morning of snuggles and coziness was in order for this girl who never, ever stops moving, or slows down, unless she is feeling pretty bad.  (Secretly, I don't totally mind when she feels really bad.  Because really bad, means really cozy and snuggly.)
This sad, pathetic little girl climbed up on the couch, settled into a bed of pillows and pulled a quilt over her feverish little body.  I put on her favorite show (Yo Gabba Gabba, of course), and snuggled in with her.
As we sat there, watching DJ Lance and the Gabba Gang sing and dance, while the sound of rain soothed us, I stared at the quilt covering us.  The last quilt that I finished, over a year ago.  I began to let myself get frustrated that I have a stack of squares ready and waiting for me to put them together.  Squares that will become Janey's quilt.  The same squares that mock me.  That bore me.  That taunt me in their unfinished sadness.
I let myself wallow there for a minute, pointlessly, and then willed myself back to the moment.  The finished quilt.  The cozy baby.  The rain.  A time will come when I finish the other quilt.  But today, I enjoyed what I did have.  A little one who needed comfort.  Who found it in my lap, under a quilt that I made.  It might not be her quilt, but that wasn't what mattered to her.  Or to me.

  1. I love those snuggly moments! Of course we never like to see our kiddos suffer, but I secretly love it when they're sick and they need me to snuggle them. As long as they're not puking. That I can do without.

  5. Is it bad that I secretly wish mine would get sick too? They just never snuggle! :(

Sweet Janey. Love the pout. That will come in handy when she wants a car someday.

So I know how much you must have enjoyed that. And with the rain outside cuddled under a beautiful quilt... even better.

  7. Awwww....sweet baby girl - perfect words to describe everything you fell. And listen to me - as a mom with one off to college, who has unfinished quilts galore....there will be time. Savor the baby right now, and the finished quilt :)

  8. It's so true isn't it...would we trade the cuddly baby for time to finish the quilt?? Nope :)
Being present...mind, body and soul...is a choice. A GOOD one.

  12. Before I scrolled down to read that you made that quilt, I thought to myself "that is a beautiful quilt" :)

I am such a novice sewer/quilter. I too have a quilt waiting to be finished. I started a cute little baby quilt but I have yet to finish it. I'm in good company at least!

Your girls are adorable; especially Janey! She has got to be the cutest baby EVER! I hope she feels better soon.

    Kind Regards,
    Nicole

  14. This is so sweet and awesome. (the cuddle part but not the sick part =/ I went to MOP'S today and it was on this same thing about enjoying our children and what we have now and thankful for god giving us these little angel's he made for us. And that he is still molding and building them for us. Just like he is still doing the same with us. And that with being a mom we always strive to be the "perfect all around mom/wife" but won't ever get there because no one is perfect. And threw all the crazy pull your hair out moments and days with school/work/kids and all these things that go wrong, get broken or lost. We have to stop and realize those are just things and remember what really matters our children/family/husbands and Jesus. I really learned a lot today in MOP'S. I'm glad I went and can't wait until we meet up again. Snugly moments with our babies sick or not are the best! I hope Janey feels better and Elodie n Amerie love yo gabba gabba too! What kid doesnt? It's what I call baby/toddler crack, so addicting but has good lessons on it too! :) Julie your an awesome wife and mom and you will get Janey's quilt done just in the right moment in time! I'm glad your getting rain over there because over here in upstate, ny we have been getting rain off n on for like 2 weeks! its depressing! lol Esp. Since Elodie's party is Saturday! =/ crazy crazy! bebe's grow too fast! Enjoy your cuddly love! Karin Marie:)

  15. i love this. the snuggly baby, the cozy quilt, and the mama who chose to enjoy THIS moment of grace & goodness. "whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God." snuggling babies, without guilt or discontent, included :)

  16. She looks so sweet all cozied into that pretty quilt. My little guy loves Yo Gabba Gabba too. It must be that age range, because that is the only show that will put him into a trance. And, yes, sometimes I use that to my advantage. Hope you have a great day, and don't be down on yourself. You're a busy mama.

  19. I think thats the hardest part is just enjoying and being. I always feel like there are so many other things I need to be doing. But really, its ok if I don't get the floor mopped {again!}. Its just going to get dirty anywas ;)

  21. i hope happy baby is back to her happy self soon. yo gabba gabba always helps. but only when it's paired with snuggles from her momma.

  22. Oh my word. That bottom lip. She's just yummy. Yesterday was a perfect day for snuggling. We even put the fireplace on, curled up in a blanket and watched a Christmas movie. I think it's a rule that you have to do that when it's raining and anywhere under 70 degrees. :) Hope the baby's feeling better today!

  25. Oh those moments... the key is to savor and thank Him. Not criticize and find all the fault we can in ourselves.

Sweet baby, beautiful quilt, blessed mom.
