Wendy Hagen is rad.
And real.
And funny.
And encouraging.
AND FUNNY.

Plus, I'm taller than she is, and I am shorter than everyone.

If you don't read her blog, you should.  Her post about Pinterest? Go. Right now.
If you haven't met her, you should.  I have.  Nanny nanny billy goat.
If you don't have a copy of her book, YOU NEED ONE.

It is my top recommendation for new mamas.  For struggling mamas.  For doing awesome at everything mamas (even if I sort of think that they are lying liars that lie).

It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you feel normal when you feel crazy, it will encourage you, it will help you know that you aren't alone, it will make you a better wife, mama, friend, and human.

For reals.

I have three copies to share with you.
Because you need to read it, like whoa.

You need to know what a MBD is, and what to do about it.
I have me quite a few MBDs.  In fact I just had a whole weekend of them.  Not my fave.  But trying to laugh through them is how I deal.

All you need to do is tell me something.  Anything.  Happy or sad.  Funny or mundane. Tell me how your kid tracked poop ALL OVER THE UPSTAIRS right before a party (oh wait, that was mine and I have never HATED THE GUTS OUT OF CARPET MORE!!!!)

I will draw three names tomorrow and send the happy books on their way.

(entries are now closed, but you can always order Wendy's book here.)

edited to add...

I loved, loved, loved reading the comments on this post.  I feel so much more normal in my crazy.
Thank you for sharing the wonderful, horrible, unbelieveable, things that happen to all of us.

When I am having a bad day, I am coming back here to find some sunshine in the shared stories.

The three winners are:
Sarah- who had for sure the worst day.
Kate B.- who made me laugh (sorry.)
Angie- I think the teenage years start at three.

  1. Ok, I'll tell you the good, the bad, the sucky and the whoop whoop moment of the day so far.

The Good: My 3 year old boy had his first swim lesson of the season so far and Did Not. Shed. One. Tear.(big happy dance! Last year was brutal)

The Bad: My 12 year old totally waltzed into my bathroom and put on my blush and mascara to wear to school. Without permission (ummm she's 12!) Like I wouldn't notice. Blech. Now I need to come up with a consequence that is clear about boundries but still says approachable about talking about girl stuff. Ugh, parenting.

The sucky: My ankles are swelling. Everyday. It hurts and I am not pregnant. Well, I better not be.

The whoop whoop: I finished my laundry. Clean, dried and put away. Every last sock. I deserve to have a frap and the bachelorette alone in peace, don't you think!?

  2. I don't have my baby yet (still cookin'!) but based on how active it is in utero I have a feeling this child will be a busy body and keep me on my toes!

  4. I have been CLAWING my way out of a deep depression (more about depression and grief on my blog). It has been an up and down journey, but today I had my first real glimmer of happy. I took the kids to the park for a nature hunt and we found a tiny frog. To see my three girls squealing with excitement while my son tried to catch the thing and the look on his face when he did was totally priceless. Then when he chased my eldest daughter with it I laughed so hard I cried. I can't remember the last time I really laughed like that. It was great.

  7. would love to read it. we actually had a "good" day-you know where no poop was thrown, naps were taken and a fun play date at a children's museum. but with a 2 year old, who knows what kind of day tomorrow will be! :-)

  9. We own a family fishing resort in northern MN...when I was potty training my youngest, I would bribe him with fishing jigs so he would take care of himself in the bathroom...you know...and it worked! He always had something to fish with at the end of the dock! And I had more time with my guests...we were both happy!
Thanks for the opportunity to win the book!

  10. Speaking of poop, I have an 11 year old son with special needs that still wears diapers. Many years ago my younger bro was watching him and my son has--still has get that-- a tendancy to put his hand in his diaper. Well he did it not once but twice while my bro was watching him. It can be quite the gross mess of trying to keep his hands out of his mouth and what not, and can really freak people out. But the funniest thing is that my bro used that experience in his public speaking class for his final speach this year at college. So that experience must have had quite the lasting affect on him!!

  14. I know I've commented a lot here, but I'm not sure if I ever shared how I found you and Wendy. When my fourth child was born, she brought with her a little something extra, an extra chromosome. Down syndrome. I'm a Christian. I believe God is good in all circumstances, but Down syndrome rocked me to my core. I started to adjust to this "new world" I was in, when at her one month check-up, we found out that she had a heart defect. After a visit to the cardiologist, we walked out of the doors with our tiny baby, who we were just informed was in heart failure and needed open heart surgery. I was so new to everything, and I didn't now much. I became gripped with the fear that she would die. It started to take over every thought I was having, and I knew the only way I could get past that fear was to face it. So I would pray, God if my baby is going to die, please just help me to go on. Just don't leave me. And I knew he wouldn't. And then I got on the internet, and I started looking up people who had lost a baby. I can't even remember what I googled or searched, but I found you and Wendy. You were the first blogs I started to follow. And seeing you two and God's grace in your life and how much happiness was in your lives, gave me hope that we would get through this. My little girl, Kamdyn, ended up not needing surgery, because her heart started to heal on its own. And now I know that many children have that same surgery, heal, and go on to do just fine. Kamdyn just turned two, and she is doing great. The holes in her heart are still closing on their own. But I think that God led me to you and Wendy, and you are both still two of my favorite blogs. I don't have the book yet, but I do plan on getting it. I know I would love it.

  16. Today was a happy day that started out sad. I've been wicked sick all weekend, but today the hubs had to go back to work. The first thing I heard after waking up was my husband telling my two year old boy that he needed to take care of me today because "Momma feels icky." All throughout the day my little man tucked me in, brought me water and tissues, and felt my forehead. So in love with that little guy today!

  23. A couple months ago feeling extra brave or maybe crazy I took all 4 kids to see the Lorax after getting the bigs settled with popcorn I sat down with the baby on my lap. I felt something warm on my leg, I felt her diaper and it was wet, thinking she just wet through I wiped my hand on my pants. Then the smell came, nope not pee it was poop. Everywhere. Took all 4 kids to the bathroom to clean up and realized I only had 1 wipe left and nothing to change her into. Oh did I mention it was pouring rain? Needless to say I still don't know how the lorax ended. I guess I didn't need to go into so much detail, I could have just said one of the twins threw up in the car on the way to school on Friday. That was neat:-)

  24. I was already planning to stop by and leave a comment to tell you that I made your vintage sheet garland for my daughter's preschool graduation brunch. We have lived in this house for four years and I'd never noticed this little alcove in the pine trees before but when I was looking for a place to hang the garland that could support it's weight it dawned on me to use that spot. Fast forward to this morning at 6am and with inspiration from you, I tranformed a small corner of our park into the perfect spot for a garden party.

I would love to win a copy of her book by the way...you always have such good recommendations that I have no doubt that it's as good as you say it is!

I just went to a middle school parent meeting for my incoming sixth grader (please. stop. time. now.) who is allergic to wheat and casein (the protein in dairy) and trying to figure out how to feed him at the middle school lunchroom. I came home from said meeting and nursed my 2.5 year old to bed. I'm tired of nursing, yet completely reassured by it at the same time. I feel lucky in this moment to feel at two ends of the spectrum. I love your blog. LOVE. Thanks for keeping it real!

Maybe I am totally naive but I didn't think I'd be dealing with this kind of response from her until she was at least 10, or maybe even a tween??!! I have a (obviously somewhat belated) feeling that we have a long road ahead of us....

  62. Found out last week that what I thought was seasonal allergies presenting itself as itchy hives on my 7 year old was actually SCABIES!! I finally put things together when her teacher said another student had scabies. The worst part is that she has probably had it for over a month because I just thought it was allergies. I am a teacher myself and cringe at the thought of how many kids she may have infected! Oh brother. We had to clean the house top to bottom and everyone had to be treated. Even the baby.

  65. Ooh, ooh, ooh...I would love to read this book. Seems like I'm surrounded by clean house having, organic only baby food making, perfect family seeming, skinny mamas. Honestly, we've been reeling since we lost our first daughter (full-term stillbirth). We were blessed with a second daughter who is 9 months old, wow! I had a mom-fail today when she decided to crawl stealthily to my flip flop and lick the bottom before I could get it away from her. YUCK! Then I spent some time disinfecting everything (though you can't disinfect her mouth!), and remembering everywhere I've worn those shoes. Puke. Oh well, no one's perfect, right? Right?! :)

Anna refuses to sit on provided chairs in room, sits on floor to read, unexpectedly hops up during Evie exam and bumps her head on dr. equipment.
Instant bloody head geyser, crying + meltdowns from several, Anna going into shock and vomiting everywhere, wheelchair rushing over to adjacent ER, Evie meltdown thrown into mix because of mass drama, and Anna gets to go home with staples in her head as a souvenir for the day.

I was home alone with the random dog in the backyard, my dog fighting with the new cat, and a cranky four year old. And then the said four year old pooped in the tub. Its like a regular old zoo around here!

  85. My step daughter just had a baby. He is cute, and I love him, and now totally get what all the fuss over being a grandparent is about. But he makes my not-even-2-years-old-yet baby look like a big kid. And that is not my fave thing at the moment.

  88. while changing my daughter's diaper, i turned to get a wipe (i had one arm trying to holding her legs still, wiggle worm!) and had to turn back quick because i start to feel something warm on my arm...yup, she was peeing on me! She managed to get it everywhere...except her diaper!

  90. I'd love to win a copy of this book - I need some laughs. As a mom of 3 boys (ages almost 5.5, almost 4 and almost 18 mos) some days I want to rip my hair out. My middle son has been marking his territory and peeing outside. He wanted to pee in our yard yesterday when he could have stepped inside and used one of the toilets in the house.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Darn the 2nd part of my comment got cut out when posting - here's what I wrote:

After we boarded the plane back in February, to leave to Florida, once the plane took off and once the seatbelt sign was taken off, both my older 2 boys had to go to the bathroom. So I took them to the front of the plane as there was only one gentleman waiting for the bathroom as opposed to the 3 people waiting for a turn in the bathroom at the back of the plane. My eldest kept saying while we were waiting that he "couldn't hold it in any longer" numerous times. The gentleman in front of us didn't care and didn't let us use the washroom ahead of him. So he peed a bit in his underwear . Anyhow finally it was our turn. He finished his business in the toilet and a nice flight attendant got me his backpack with his change of underwear. Luckily his pants were dry. He changed his underwear, got back dressed and I sent him back to our seats, in the middle of the plane. My mom was at the seats with my youngest son. Then it was my middle son's turn to pee. However we discovered that he could not reach the toilet seat, he is too short. If I lift him, he becomes stiff and can't pee. He is also too heavy. Obviously there is no stool on the plane, so I asked the flight attendant if she had any ideas (while telling my son to hold it in). She said "hang on" and left to go get something. She then came back with a "barf bag" as they are leak proof. So I convinced him to pee in the bag and then I dumped the pee in the toilet. Creative & got the job done. Later on during the flight he went to the bathroom again the same way. He thought it was funny. Then, while we were descending to Fort Lauderdale airport he said he had to pee very badly "now". He said he couldn't hold it. So I pulled out the barf bag from the pocket of the seat in front of us, got him to stand up and pee in the bag quickly to be able to get him back into his seat for landing. As he was peeing though, he had to announce it several times, "I'm peeing in a bag! I'm peeing in a bag!" He had everyone in the rows in front and in back of us laughing hysterically. I almost died!

And the entire trip, my middle son had to go to the bathroom at the oddest times. So he has now been marking his territory on trees too. I love how easy it is to take a boy to the bathroom while out! I feared that when we got home and his teacher asks him what he did in Florida, I feared he would tell them he "peed in bags and peed on trees". Boy was I embarrassed because he tells everyone he sees this story!

And, now I shall have all of those lovely potty power songs re-playing in my head for the next few months all over again. Lovely.

  103. I'd love the book not only for myself (even though I'm a grandmother) I'd also share it with my girls. Last funny thing that happen is when my husband took our dog and three year old potty training grandchild for a walk and stopped to talk to a neighbor. Obviously he stayed a little to long because our dog decided to go to the bathroom on the neighbors yard. Then our grandchild decided to go "the exact same way".

I also try to see the many blessings the God has given me and it usually outweighs all the bad.

  114. I think it's hysterical when my 7.5-month-old son gets overtired and then gets loopy. I don't keep him up on purpose just to see the loopiness...it's just a cute by-product of a kid that won't go to sleep, no matter how hard I try.

  116. So my little man, 2 years old, is the cutest thing ever, and we love to bake together. I pour, he stirs. It's all gravy and mashed potatoes until I walk in on him in the bathroom "stirring" the toilet water with my (unplugged) Chi straight iron. Yes, I'm glad he's not hurt, that it wasn't plugged in, yada, yada, yada. But it was a Chi. A very expensive Chi. I now have a frizz mess on my head because the cheap-o straightner from Target is lame. And Caleb's hair is perfectly straight. No frizz. Not fair. ;o)

  117. My son is 19 months old and we just started potty training. I know, everyone tells me its way too young, but trust me, he's ready. So to get him to be patient on the potty, because he hates to sit still, we watch Diego on the tablet. He gets so entranced that he will let himself sit there and do his business. After one week of using the potty, that's pretty good!

  130. this book has been on my 'hubby buy this for me' list for a while. I still don't have it but really want it! thanks for the chance!

last week, my (almost) 2 year old got into a bottle of lotion (that we keep up high on the dresser or the back of the bathroom counter). all over himself (and the carpet, and the toys). all while his 3 1/2 year old brother was playing in the same room. big brother came and got me when little brother started getting him with the lotion.
    then it happened again.
    and again.
    and again.
it was funny the first time. not so much the fourth.

  131. I'm a new mom, and I've got a 3.5 month old little girl. She's pretty mellow, but I've still spend an exorbitant amount of time thinking about, discussing and tracking her pooping habits. Who knew that I'd be so excited about baby poop?

  134. The latest fun around here was a glass bottle of lemon juice that was dropped onto the kitchen tile, shattered into a million pieces and cracked a tile. I had to mop the floor 4 times to get all the stickiness! Oh, did I mention that we were trying to get out the door for school drop off?

  139. I am a mom of two, and watch four (2 two year olds, and 2 four year olds) kids out of my little 1,100 sq ft home 5 days a week all day long. You'd think I'd have it all together since their parents pay me to watch their children, but most days I crash at 5:30 and don't have anything left to give my two. I'm absolutely desperate!

  141. I usually throw my kids outside while I make their lunch. So after I fix it all up, I lay out a blankey for us to eat...well I turn my back for one second and find my son james, 1yr old, drinking out of our dog lucy's bowl. Lovely.

We finish up and my son Joe, 2yrs, and I are now playing with lucy. He loves wnen I turn him upside down so lucy can lick his face. So joe is hanging upside down and lucy is going to town on his pb&j face...then joe decides to bite..yes I said BITE luck's tongue!

All while my oldest, abigail 3 yrs, is inside attempting to use my MAC makeup on our 2 male cats that she named Diamond and Diamond.

    Ugh. Never a dull moment.

  142. Oh I have so many stories!! The most recent was when we took a trip to visit some family members who we rarely see, they had a little pool set up for the kids and of course my 2 year old would be the one who decided he needed to poop in his swim diaper (we all know those things were not made to hold poop!) so there was poop floating in the pool, kids screaming, Grandma trying to clean the pool while I wrangled my son to change him! It was slightly embarrassing, but just one of many moments we've encountered in the last 2 years!

I absolutely love your blog, I stop by every day, but rarely leave comments. Thanks for sharing your life with us!

  143. This is actually a really long story but I will try to condense it. When my now six year old was 4, we stopped to run the car thru the car wash. After I paid and sat in the line waiting to drive the car thru the tunnel, he started to cry that he didn't want to wash the car THIS way! He wanted to go home and wash it with the hose! Well, I had already paid, couldn't get out of the line if I wanted to, and didn't want to wash the car with the hose. I explained all that and in response he began to thru an unholy fit which included pitching his shoes at me and unbuckling himself from his car seat. I exited the tunnel and drove 10 feet to the vacuums, got out of the car and opened the back door to buckle him back in----and found him completely naked!!! Itwas then that I strapped the child back into his car seat and drove him home stark naked. It would have been an interesting story to explain had I gotten pulled over for speeding!

  147. A favorite, favorite band right now is one you must check out: "Ascend the Hill." They are an indie rock worship band that sing straight Scripture. They are *amazing!* Good for the soul; and you know what's even better? When my kiddos sing these songs. You won't be disappointed. Another fabulous band (geared for kids, but we love them, too!) is "The Rizers," from Mars Hill Church (Driscoll's church). Again, these folks sing straight Scripture. Love, love. Seriously. You will too!

I was running, while holding my potty training daughter who had taken off her panties, to the bathroom once and right as we got into the bathroom she dropped a bomb on the carpet and I totally stepped in it! And then, because I didn't know I had stepped in it, I tracked it all across the bathroom. (Who in the world puts carpet in a bathroom anyways?!) It was awful!!
