When it comes to boys, I'm clueless.
The only language that I currently speak is pink, sparkles and drama.

After an incredibly long string of girl births in my circle of friends, I am attending not one, not two, but three boy baby showers in the next month.

Another loss in the Great Hard Drive Fail of 2010 was my rad bookmark folder chock full of boy ideas and inspiration...

There are burp cloths, tie onesies....
but that is all I've got in my arsenal.

I need ideas.
Easy ideas.

Help me out moms.
What was your favorite shower gift?
What do you like?
Hate?
Moms who speak Lego, mud and blue.

Because there is really no way to get away with a Pretty. Messy. Flower on a boy.

  1. how about a cape? sure, they won't use it for a while (until they are at least 2) but mom can hang it up in their room as a decoration in the meantime...and i know my son would love a cape right about now.

and a huge box of bandaids.

  2. Julie, I think I have some boy stuff on the tutorial page on my blog (everydaymorgan.wordpress.com - see the top tabs), but I make not promises. I always found it a lot harder to do stuff for boys.

  3. I think peepee teepees are really cute, and I actually really like getting the MOM a little something like a vintage pearl GC or mani pedi for day of birth GC. If you so freezer paper decals on onesies, there are some great ones for boys, like chick magnet and "my daddy is a nerd" pocket protector onesie.

have fun in the world of mud and blue

  4. oh, love the cape idea, would love one to hang and play with for my boy!!!

  5. What about a set of onsies made with freezer paper stencils? It's so hard to find 'cool' boys shirts. Maybe do a play on words with his name, or fun ones like 'my mom rocks' ...
Or maybe a few of the '90 minute' shirt from (Dana) Made. If you did several it wouldn't take as long?

I'm thinking one of these fabric baskets, http://ayumills.blogspot.com/2008/05/tutorial-fabric-basket.html filled with bath toys or books would be super cute. Or maybe with a stroller blanket?

For older I think the super cape = lots of fun :). We have lots of fun with them here.

Just my first thoughts ... I'm sure whatever you do it will be way cute, way fun and way appreciated. Way. :D

  6. I just saw tye-dyed onesies I LOVED! Also I think the tie onesies fantastic. I have also seen a bunch of patterns for felt shoes that are super cute before they walk of course. Or crazy legs, I saw a tutorial on a blog of someone who converted knee socks into baby legs which are so cute if you can find the skull and crossbones patterns, or other boy things. I don't know why you can't make a boy version of your peep onesies. Maybe like a pac-man or ball(baseball, basketball etc) you are super creative I am sure you will come up with something amazing.

  8. In February or March, Made (http://www.dana-made-it.com/) and Made by Rae (http://www.made-by-rae.com/) did a whole series on "Celebrate the Boy." I have a whole slew of things bookmarked to make my 2 little men. At least I think it was them! Pretty sure.

    BTW...the band-aid idea is a great one!

    Good luck!

  9. I love the cape also, but how about a blankee that can be used as a cape?

  10. So basically you're saying I should NOT make something for the mom whose shower I am attending with you. Because whatever you create is going to be a bazillion times more awesome than what I could make.

Now I'm off to check out her registry...

  11. I am also loving the cape idea! When Gabe was a baby he had these awesome pants with kneepads (or patches, really). It might be cute to make some of those!

  12. Check out my blog at http://waitingfortheflowers.blogspot.com where I have been a busy bee making wreaths. It is the perfect gift for a shower, especially for someone to tastefully announce to the world (on their hospital door and home door) that their little boy has arrived. It is easy to do and if you are interested I can send you my tutorial! Enjoy! The one in blue, green and brown would work great.

  13. I recently had a sister-in-law and a friend have baby boys. The one onesie I applicade a car on and made booties to match--also made a scrapbook for the Mom to put photos in. The other I had some sock monkey material and cut out one square and applicade it on a onsie, made booties and a little bag out of the monkey material. Also included a scrapbook for that Mom as well. Just ideas--boys are difficult--I have two girls and I tend to think in the girl language:)

  14. Well being a mom of 3 boys :) I love the cape idea, also onesies w/ cute ties or animal fabric appliques on them would be really cute!

  15. My favorite things from when JT was born was his handmade hooded towels, cool T-shirts that said things like Chick Magnet or ABCD instead of ACDC :) I also like the little leather shoes like Robeez and my friend makes the cutest ties that come in teeny baby to bigger boys sizes. Since we go to church every week, it's nice to have cute ties :) Oh! And JT's most favorite thing is the minky and flannel tied quilt that one of my 2nd graders gave me.

  16. sweet picture!
julie, this is on my list of things to make for my 2 boys. it is a great tutorial and can be adapted with a reverse applique, etc. as a mom of 2 boys i would love to have one as a gift!
ok, i just read an above post as i was writing this and someone else suggested it too!!!!! :)

  17. please don't get a peepee teepee. I got 3 of those things and never used it once, never, ever. It just seemed weird to do so. Automoblox are rad. my boy loves them to death. We got him his first one before he was even 1 and he loves them.

  18. I love to make onesies or also you can buy these darling onesie type outfits (that are long sleeve and long legged and not pajamas but more of an outfit) that you can buy in a 3 pack at target. They are out of cute fabric. I love to iron on and sew down fun things. Boats, fish, dinosaurs, guitars, airplanes, trains, cars. These are just a few that I have done. They are so cute when you are done. There are always fun blocks or balls too. And well, I am always a fun blanket fan. There are some very fun boys fabrics out there. Lets see what else...bibs. Love bibs too. You can always buy a set of bibs and again iron on some fun things. Usually I go to google images and google the cars or trains in coloring book pages, print them out and use them to cut out my images. Simple, but so cute. And personal. Just a few ideas. Can't wait to see what you end up doing. Since I am the very opposite to you. 3 boys. But, boys are MUCH harder to think of when it comes to "making" things. Have fun!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. How about making or buying the cute onsies that have the ages on it, i.e. 1 month, 2 months, 3 months? It makes it easy for any mom to document her baby's growth. She simply takes a picture of her baby in the onsie and then has an easy scrapbook page or photo book page already done for her. This is an idea I wish was around when my girls were babies.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh! So many fun things, you can always make (or buy) swaddle blankets, cloth blocks, manly baby legs, rattly cloth toys, any cute thing appliqued on a onesie (since so many things out in the shops are so over the top!).

I hope you have fun with this! Boys are pretty much the same, just different things/patterns on the shirts :)

*sigh* fine, I will also say, check out my shop for some cute swaddlers ;) bitsorbobbins.etsy.com

  21. It's so funny that I happen to be browsing for a baby gift for my friend's first child - a boy. I am going to give him a personalized blankie. Like the one that Heather made for my niece:

    http://skylarsclips.blogspot.com/2009/08/sweet-arrival.html

But for a boy. Good luck sweet Julie and thank you for sharing this beautiful picture of your girls with my headbands.

  23. If you are looking to buy something, I make robot hats for boys (and girls too, yes... robots for girls ;)). I may be biased, but a robot hat on a newborn boy = the cutest thing ever. You can check them out here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/thefuzzyrobot

btw, I enjoy your blog very much - been following for some time. And your girls are adorable. to be honest - with one toddler boy, I feel like I wouldn't know what to do with a girl!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay. I don't have any kids yet - so no... I don't speak boy. And, I grew up in a house where my dad was the only male (the dog & cat: girls too.)

    BUT!

    I've seen some cute stuffs...

    * Robot onesies - something like this (seen a tutorial somewhere):
    http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=41034319

    * Diaper clutch:
    http://mudpuddlesanddaisies.blogspot.com/2010/03/diaper-clutch-tutorial.html

    * Or - you could some sort of cool wall-art thing for the little guy's nursery (if you sort of know the colors/theme). Like a giant letter (if you know the name) or even '10 (for the year of birth)... I'm thinking using the concept of this wreath (the burlap mixed w/ patterned fabric) & make it into the shape of the letter or numbers... onto a large piece of colored poster/tag board & framed/matted maybe? >>>
    http://tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com/2010/01/2010-burlap-wreath-and-giveaway.html

{I apologize for the other-use of slashes in this comment: /) <= oops, there's another one!

  25. Peepee teepees. They might sounds silly but I couldn't change a diaper without a washcloth to cover my son's parts. That little bit hit the fresh air and it would turn on the waterworks. I always wanted those peepee teepees but never invested.
Hooded bath towels are also great. Those ones where the hood looks like a duck head are especially cute.

  26. I have two girls, so I know what you mean about finding boy toys. My mom always makes a boy taggie blanket using boy fabric and ribbon. She made one for my friend's little boy out of camouflage fleece and some coordinating ribbon. It was really cute and the mommy-to-be loved it. I personally always like to get/give cute board books. You could get Good Night Gorilla... and attach a stuffed gorilla, or something like that.

  27. i'm having a boy next week... and am scared out of my mind. how will i entertain a kid without using my vast mental file of disney princess song lyrics?

i got a super cute plain onesie with a neck tie shape cut from cool fabric and appliqued on. i can't wait for him to wear it to church.

  28. I made taggy ball for a baby boy a little while ago. It was super easy! you can check it out here. http://alwaysmakinglifeprettier.blogspot.com/2010/02/yet-another-baby-ball.html

Also I came across this super cute monster stuffy the other day, http://www.revoluzzza.com/?p=422

  30. I know you are really crafty and all so maybe you could come ups with some fart trapping device. Any boy would like that and any mom would appreciate it- especially if it could trap those suckers and diffuse the smell. Get to work now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oooh, me me me! I speak Lego, mud and blue LOL! Actually, I just started speaking it as I had my first son after two girls, and I was scared to death! But it is so much fun and I just love my little man to pieces!!! I am quickly becoming well versed in baby proofing - he pulls the plug covers right out of the walls and laughs at my attempt to keep him contained with gates - yikes!!!

My favorite gift was not handmade, but it was a box of the cutest little "shoe" socks for boys - they were made by Trumpette and I adored them! Carter had a pair that matched every outfit from that one gift. Plus, they stayed on great. If you Google "trumpette boy socks" you should see them. Super duper cute!

As far as handmade, check out the freezer paper stencil ideas on http://iammommahearmeroar.blogspot.com - she also does cute stuff with a bleach pen! She has two boys so she probably has more ideas as well.

    Hope this helps!

  32. accessories: hooded bath towels, bibs, burp cloths, hats, appliqued onesies, sunglasses, soft blankies

    books: Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Gorilla

*anything with a monkey on it was always a hit with my two*

  33. My favorite gift is the same as Heather's . . . TRUMPETTE socks. They have some that look like converse shoes, etc. I've given them as gifts and they are always a hit. Adorable girl stuff too and the packaging is adorable.

As for hand made. I LOVE the cape idea and bandaids. I like the onsies with words too . . . my advice (I have three boys) is use bold trendy colors, avoid the baby blue look. Just my opinion. Have fun!!

  34. Since summer is right around the corner, how about some baby swimming gear. Little swim trunks, sunscreen, cute hat, baby floatie, hooded towel all wrapped up in a cute beach pail he can play with next summer! As a mom of two boys and water lovers this would be the BEST gift.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Homemade receiving blankets are the best! I usually make mine 34"x34" The store bought ones are always just a little too small to swaddle.

  37. My favorite thing to make is a floor mat that looks like a city...I've found the fabric on etsy called Merryville...

But what about a nursing cover?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I had a boy 6 months ago and was clueless about them myself. Some of my favorite boy things so far - Aiden & Anais receiving blankets (buy), onesies with freezer paper stencils of tractors, cute monsters, rockets, guitars (make), a cute little knotted hat made from knit fabric (or there's a super cute tutorial for the Sweet Pea Pilot Cap on Sew Liberated). And don't get the peepee teepees. I was given 2 sets and they don't work (even though it's a cute idea). Also, I would have loved to have received a large soft blanket with a cool print on one side and minkee on the reverse...those boutique blankets are so expensive to buy, but I bet you could whip one up in 30 minutes! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have 3 myself, and freaked when the girl came- learning dolls, pink and drama :) But already knew drama with one of my boys :) hehe! Anyway, What I love the best and give everyone I know for showers are handmade loveys, with ribbon tags. Minkee on one side, adorable bright print boy cotton on the other. I make the tags funky crazy though- not just looped- and with fun, wild ribbons. Swirly, intertwining, knotted, etc... The kiddos LOVE them- mine still have them at night :) They are super easy and fast. And handmade, so it means a little extra :) Whatever you decide on, have fun and enjoy the boyness :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am telling you I LOVELOVELOVE Trumpette socks for boys...and they have skater socks now too. My son wore them all the time; I buy them for all my friends having boys. Because babies don't wear shoes. But, they need to stay warm. In style.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I made a baby size cape attached to a onesie for my Godson last summer. Its on my blog- look under friends and it should be there somewhere. Lots of photos.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Some seriously crazy suggestions above. SOME.

Wipe cases. Lots of them. You have no idea how many wipes I have gone through in 2 years.

A crayon roll. With crayons. Duh.

A first aid kit...made from fabric because he WILL turn it into a weapon if he finds it.

Ties. Preferably in pink. Because I have only made one and I wish I had a trizillion.

A fabric photo book. My son got one for his 1st half birthday (confused?) and LOVED it as an infant/toddler.

Good luck, doll. You'll make it rad, whatever it is.

and her etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/BlueTurtleCollection she does not have anything up in her shop right now but if you look through her sold items you can get a good idea. she has a bunch she will email you pics of and such. Good luck!!!

  50. As a mom of 4 girls and then a boy :) I love the idea for boy onsies. I made myself a bunch of boy bibs because I had tons of pink ones, so boy bibs and burp clothes would come in handy. Also, how about some boy toys? I know there's a tutorial for baby blocks-those would have been real cool for my son or a crinkle blanket/toy (not sure what it's called). Now that he is two, I'm finding that I have to get him some new toys-we had a lot of girl stuff. I just saw a tutorial for felt tools and a tool box-I know I'd love to have that now-it's on my to do list. There's also great tutorials for match box holders/carriers-I have that on my to do list too! Hope this helps.

  51. Homemade baby blankets with fun fabric for a little boy (not a baby boy), big enough to swaddle now and use as they get older. My son is two and he still uses his homemade blankies we received from a friend.

  52. As mom to four boys and 13 grandsons, I have never had a problem figuring out what to give for "boy" showers. Burp cloths, weewee teepees, and simple receiving blankets in BOY fabrics!!

  55. After having a girl & all the fun that comes with that, I'm not gonna lie.. I was a little sad to learn the 2nd round we were having a boy. However, I wouldn't change it for a thing now! My favorite 'accesory' when he was an infant was Robeez shoes. And I just adored putting him in smocked shortalls and bubbles. But hey, I am from the South! :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. My fav that I got was a bunch of stuff, in a huge Tonka truck. He is now almost 3 and has been playing with it since he was about 6months old.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorite things for my boy were the clothes that were "cool." The onsies that were all "boy" and said funny sayings that girls just don't do. The "man" shirts that make a little baby boy look like a little old man, and cool shoes. It's hard to splurge on shoes that they will outgrow, but I adored having cool robeez (or fake Target kind) and shirts that were more rocker status than cutesy. :) AND, Melissa and Doug wood toys. They are indestructable. And, that is a good thing with boys.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm not much help because I only have 3 girls also (and speak pink, sparkles and drama..hehe). But I do make boy gifts and my two favorites are personalized baby blankets made out of fabric that matches baby's nursery, and peepee teepees (you can make them out of fun fabric and a washcloth...super easy and super cute...and I hear super functional). Boy am I glad I had girls...I would NOT know what to do with those..."things." :D

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hey, I just found your blog awhile ago and LOVE it!!! I'm so sorry about your hard drive - that's GOT to be depressing! So I know it's already been mentioned, but DEFINITELY check out Celebrate the Boy on MADE! I have three boys and would like to make every single project! (Or have it made for me since, you know, I have three boys!)

  60. I think you need to talk to Crystal (Little Bit Funky)! 2 boys, crafty...and she's making those cute hoho monsters!

    ReplyDelete
  61. A ball of any kind is great for a boy - I've seen really cute fabric ones with a jingle bell inside, so much fun to roll around! So are wooden cars, dinosaurs and trucks.

We are die hard fans of anything Duplo (although not really useful for an infant). We never used the peepee teepee - they sort of gross me out :P

    ReplyDelete
  62. A boy we know had a shirt that said "I make dirt look good." I thought that was good. I try to do a scrapbook for the first year (a page for each month) and give it to the mom to be. I have 3 girls and still don't have a first year scrapbook done for them. It would have been so nice to have one ready to just pop one or two pics per month into and be done. It has been a HUGE hit. It does help that I have a friend who designs the pages and we all pay to copy her work at "A scrapbook in a day workshop.";)

I also do t's (and you could do onesies). You print out whatever letter, shape etc place it on the front and spray a bleach water mixture on(make sure that you place a barrier between front and back of your shirt so the bleach doesn't go all the way through). You then remove the paper shape/letter and wash in cold. It turns out super cool, batik-ish looking. I do numbers for birthday presents. Kids love them!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Trucks! Tonka! They even make ones for youngers, like 18 months. Yes, baby boy won't be able to play with it for awhile, but it makes a fun gift and looks cute in a boy's bedroom. My favorite baby boy gift is a truck...or two!!

  64. I heart my son's onsies with ties... sewn on in cool fabrics... I still buy them for him and he is 13... JK he is 19 months. I say NO to pee pee tee pee.... NO NO I got some for a gift and used them only to have him pee it into the air and off....PEE was EVERYWHERE... I had 2 different styles and both performed way below my standards... 2 thumbs down. Another thing that I loved was a rag quilt made for the carset/stroller. It was made out of sock monkey fabric and still is one of his faves...GOOD LUCK boy buying is a challenge

  66. Just one suggestion as it is now my "go-to" gift for new moms and can work for a boy or a girl...
    http://www.etsy.com/shop/pickysticky
EVERYONE asks me where I got these and I love how easy and fast they are.

Personally, I think the best thing you can give to a new mom is a good meal...make something they can freeze, put directions on top, provide paper plates, cups, etc. Sounds simple but it just about brought tears to my eyes on those nights when I felt so overwhelmed and tired (and let's be honest, it made my husband pretty happy too).

Good luck! I am sure whatever you decide on will be much appreciated :)

  68. Hi Julie,

I am having a boy in 3 weeks or so, and after a girl, I am not sure what I will need either! I have been concentrating on buying clothes/making clothes, and not thinking about all the other things...

These soft pay balls intrigue me, and I think would be cute for a boy in fun fabrics:
    http://grandrevivaldesign.typepad.com/ballpattern1000.pdf

And, I want something to cover his little wee in case of spraying, so I am not sure what is wrong with pee pee teepees, but I have seen them in more of an oval elliptical shape which seems to make more sense: (not my etsy shop)

    http://littlebirdiesecrets.blogspot.com/2008/11/i-laughed-out-loud-when-i-heard-name-of.html

I love all the ideas, and the MADE blog does have a ton of great ideas. My daughter loves her cape, and so do all her girl cousins, so I imagine a cape is a great gift for a boy too! I love the onesie ideas with things appliqued on them too.

Can't wait to see what you make!

  69. i love cute handmade stuff but the TRUMPETTE socks are the BEST especially for boys since you can't really accessorize! they stay on, don't go for the knock-offs-they may seem small but they are the best-i think they were the most used gift on my little guy!! also two BIG thumbs DOWN on PEE PEE TEE PEE-DUMB DUMB DUMB-if you want to clean up more of a mess sure, but they just were a waste of time!!

  71. I don't know you at all but I completely understand! =) When I tell people about my house I describe it as "all things pink and sparkly"! Mainly because I have three girls - 5,4 & 6 months! Too funny to find someone else in my same boat - pink & sparkly boat that is!

  72. bibs, Bibs, BIBS! Seriously. I have two boys and it is hard to find cute bibs for boys. The cutest I've found are the bibs from Target. You could even make matching burp clothes...you know, if mom is into matching stuff??

The BEST bibs are the ones (like from Target) where the velcro fastens on the side towards the front. Why? All the other back fastening ones would leave a velcro rash (similar to rug burn) on the back of my little guys neck, because they never closed exactly right and there would be exposed velcro somewhere. Ouch! Another way around that is the 'pull over the head' type of bib...they are great and when they get older they can't pull them off as easy. :)

You can dress a boy up in something cute, but the bib is gonna cover it up anyways, so bibs are huge. If I knew then what I know now, I would have made some myself out of fun fabrics. No silly sayings needed. Simple fun patterned fabrics that would match main boy clothing colors would do just fine. :) I even saw this adorable super hero themed fabric that I am now kicking myself I didn't buy!

Hope this helps? I'm sure whatever you come up with will ROCK!!
(Ooo...some kiddie guitar themed fabric would be awesome too!)
